The neighbours of Bayern are in the West and Northwest, Baden-Württemberg and Hessen, in the North Thuringia and Saxony, in the East the Czech Republic and in the South Austria.
The major cities are: Munich (1,170,100), Nuremberg (487,500), Augsburg (253,200), Würzburg (125,500) and Regensburg (124,400).
Bavaria has a long tradition as the "Kingdom of Bavaria", in 1920 Coburg (part of Saxony) joined Bavaria and in 1945 the loss of Palatinate to the new state Rhineland-Palatinate.
Bavaria is the media center of Germany and according to an IHK survey in 'greater' Munich there are more than 11,000 media companies with a around 127,000 working force and a gross turnover of over 20 billion Euro.
More than 10,000 people are working for the Radio and TV companies.
The commercial broadcasters Sat 1, ProSieben, DSF (sports channel), Kabel 1, RTL 2, MTV, TM 3, N 24, Disney Channel, Fox kids and pay-channel Premiere-World are transmitting from Münich and have their headquarter in Bavarian Capital. The first German Teleshopping-broadcaster H.O.T. and the all news channel N24 are all established in München.
In Munich near the Olympiapark, the Olympic Stadium and the 289.53 metres high communication tower with its revolving restaurant at 182 metres, are the headquarters, of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW). BMW, with is famous four-cilinder BMW-tower, is the largest company in the north of Munich. Initially, the company started in 1916 building airplane engines. In 1923, BMW started building motorbikes and eventually in 1928 they started building cars. The BMW Group exists now of BMW, MINI and the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
In Munich the Olympic Games were held in 1972, the World Championship Football took place in Germany in 1974, and the main activities took place in Munich, including the final, which was won by the National German team.
In 2006, again, the FIFA World Championship will be held in Germany. The legendary ex German international football player, coach of FC Bayern, coach of the National German football team, and Bayern Munich's club President since 1994, Franz Beckenbauer (Der Kaiser) is also chairman of the 2006 World Cup Organising Committee.
Another famous event in Munich is the Oktoberfest, where 5.9 million people consumed in 2002 more than 5.7 million litres of beer. Zum Wohl!

On January 1st, 2002, the Minister-Presidents of the 16 German states agreed that the Lotto companies of these countries would support financially the organisation of the World Championship Football 2006, to be organised in Germany.
The German Football Federation (DFB) will receive 12% above the fixed turnover of 2001 of all the Oddset betting till 2006. The generated financial needs should be used for cultural aspects surrounding the World Championship, as well as for the (re)construction of the stadiums.

Since December 2002, lotto players in the German state of Bayern have been able to buy lotto and lottery tickets via SMS. Officials close to the project say the results have been "surprisingly positive" so far.
According to Erwin Horak, president of the state lottery in Bayern, the new service was the first in its kind in Germany and one of the first in the world. "With this new concept and a very attractive draw, we are able to satisfy the wishes of our players," Horak said. "It was for us essential that the security concerning the data transfer, as well as simple and comfortable use, should be state of the art. This new betting service we have realised in close cooperation with the m-commerce company Beamgate, with whom we are already, for over more than a year, offering our draw results via mobile (devices)."
To buy tickets by "handy" is very simple. The user registers at www.lotto-bayern.de, prepares a number of favourite lottery number combinations (a ticket) and saves them each under a unique name ( e.g. "Valentine" for "3 21 22 28 30 36"). To play his numbers in the upcoming drawing, the user sends an SMS with a PIN code and the name of the ticket he wants to play.
Dr. Miguel Albrecht, CTO of Beamgate AG in Munich, added, "Technically speaking, two modules perform most of the work. A subscriber management system maintains the profile of the user and executes the actual gaming and billing (shared mobile and Web).
"A mobile media platform manages all messaging functions, including semantic parsing of the user's requests. This service is offered to customers of all German mobile operators and value-added resellers (seven in total). It started with Lotto Bayern and is currently being rolled out to another five German federal states."
Beamgate's interactive platform supports all usual mobile terminals as well as their communication protocols. Support for future technology standards (e.g. GPRS and UMTS) is already built in.
